As a Christian and someone who loves the mountains, how could I not be a fan of this painting?

Ridgeway, Colorado is one of my favorite painting locations earth. That’s where John Wayne’s “True Grit” was filmed, and I think it’s one of the most beautiful parts of Colorado.  I’ve painted in that area several times over the years. I used to go every fall when the aspens turned, and I continue to be inspired by the rugged beauty of the San Juan Mountains and the Dallas Divide in particular.

God has Blessed our nation with many stunning locales, but few can complete with the beauty between Ridgeway and Telluride Colorado.

Best Pals

I’ve been fortunate to have had many great dogs in my life.  I can’t image life without one, and I don’t understand people who don’t like animals.

In this painting, I wanted to show the close relationship this young cowboy has with his dog.  I kept the background very simple because I didn’t want it to compete with them.  Although this is a very simple painting, It is one of my favorites.

Counting His Blessings

Normally, I don’t care for paintings which feature the rear view of the focal point horse or cowboy.  This painting is an exception because I could not think of a better way to tell this story.  This cowboy is thankful for the good year he’s had ,and I thought I needed to show his ranch and cattle in the background.

This is another example of using the painting’s title to help tell the story. Had I given it a more generic name like “End of A Long Day” it would have lost the story.

The Poker Game

“The Poker Game” – Jack Sorenson

I must admit I love Poker.  I’ve been part of a weekly game for most of my life, first with the cowboys that worked for us, later with my sons and other family members.  We only play for small stakes, but on a good night I might win twenty dollars.

I’ve wanted to do a painting of a poker game for quite some time, but I don’t like to do interiors.  Here I was able to include the game in a more typical western art setting, and I was even able to include some horses.

Unfortunately, doctors are unable to make house calls as they once did. Here, a family doctor has had to get wet to check on a patient.

This great old house is in Dodge City, Kansas.  As soon as I saw it, I knew it would be perfect for this story-line.  The warm light from inside creates a nice contrast to the rain and mud outside.

Jeanne and I have been blessed to have a friend who is a Doctor, he has made many house calls through the years to our house and this is Tim in the picture.  His  wife Cathy commissioned this for him.
